Default Humminbird Helix 7 Di Combo unit

Has anyone else run into this problem with the above unit. The transducer is mounted approx. 1/2"above the bottom of the boat. The graph loses depth
reading at approx. 7mph. Humminbird says the transducer should be mounted below the bottom of the boat which would mean fishing Toledo & most lakes around central & S La. you will break it off going over a stomp.
If you've had this problem & found a resolution please let me know.

most down image and side image graphs wont read while on plane without a thru hull transducer hooked up with a Y cable. I wouldn't let it hang below the bottom of the boat. I have the exact same unit as you and I have mine mounted to the bottom of my jack plate on a transducer shield and saver. mine doesn't read while on plane either but im fine with it. I want to say the thru hull transducer and Y cable was around $150 to add on.

The transducers are made to kick up if struck by something.

If you want to read the depth while on plane you will have to put it into the water.

Been running transducers in the water for 28 years and only had 1 break and that was due to over tightening the bolt that allows it to move.

There is a certian way you have to place the transduer on the V in order for it to read while on plane. I moved mine and it says locked on the bottom going 40mph. h

If its set right and you can adjust your ping speed. You should be able to get a reading

the transducer has to stay in contact with the water to get a reading while on step. Here is a picture of how its set up on my boat

If you have a step and the transducer is installed on that step. You will only get a reading while Idiling. Because the step will be out the water when on step. I had that problem and had to move it down to the V to get a reading

With the humminbird you will have to have a high speed sensor to read while running. Honestly this isn't the forum you should be looking for depth finder info on, Bassboatcentral.com has way more knowledgeable people on it when it comes to electronics, especially since you can directly ask Doug Vahrenberg who is a humminbird guru

That's correct, it has to be just a hair below the boat hull so it's not getting too much air bubbles. Clean water without a lot of disturbance. You should be able to at least hit 25 -30 and get a depth reading. You won't get a clear view like you are idling but at least you'll have depth.

As for tearing it off, a thru hull mount would definitely be better but it can be done with an external mount. The ducer should rotate up if you bump a stump or go over a stump while using the trolling motor. If you are hitting stumps on plane we got bigger issues. Adjust how tight the mount is and make it just tight enough to stay in place while on plane... that's all you need.

Not sure if this helps, but I know my units (lowrance) won't pick up depth when moving faster than idle speed when side or down scan is displayed, only when the traditional 2d sonar is up it will read depth while running. Maybe try it with only the map/2d sonar screen before moving anything around?

You can get the side and Down scan to read while on step. (HDS touch units). But you have to install it like the transducer. My buddy has a 21ft nautic star. It doesnt have a step in the back. And his side and Down scan reads while running on step.

this is good for going back and looking at your logs on the computer. You get to see all the changes in the contour. But if your not logging data then it really don't matter.
