I have costa's, waiting on the neck thing, 17ft boat, and live on a river that averages 35 feet deep... And catch bass like a mexican catches a penny when thrown at them.. Do I apply??

Cabela's specials for rod and reel. Weighing device?...My imagination! I've yet to catch a fish under 4 lb this way and, that's oFISHal!

Glasses? Those indoor/outdoor rigs that I get from the plant work seem to get me through. When they get mud or salt water all over em, I don't freak out, I just rub them off!

...Maybe this is why my trip Sunday sucked so bad!

Talk to ya grandpas about trout fishing. They had a choice between a spoon a speck rig or a white tout tail . w/ a rod and reel that may cast 50feet. most had no motor on the boat . yet they caught plenty trout.
I had this discussion w/ some fishermen at the past time last week.
Trout are animals, trout are not intelligent. they think of 3 things .
Food ,comfort and making little trout. That's it! We as fishermen make it harder than it is. What makes it hard to catch fish is the fisherman. maybe not you ,it may be the idiot who runs right through a school of trout when chasing birds. It may be the guy who doesn't understand that you can't stomp around in the boat and make a bunch of noise. It may be the guy who has more money than sense and buys a $40k boat but has no clue on how to operate that boat to optamize his chances on catching fish.
But it could also be you and me Trying to figure out which of the 2000 lures of 300 different colors that we can MAKE the trout bite today?
For me , i bank fish or wade and have been doing it long enough to understand that the fish will be in certain places at certain times of the year. they are not swimming miles away to feed. they will feed in that location some time during the day. All i can do is try to understand what conditions will cause them to feed and be there when they do. You can pull up to an area in your boat and make 15 cast w/ no bites and leave and drive 5 miles to another spot and do the same thing w/ the same results. You may miss the bite in the spot by 10 min. or 2 hrs ,but you still miss the bite. You can miss the bite all day long or you may get lucky and hit a spot when the fish decide to feed . Now you can say you found the fish???
No you lucked up and found feeding fish. but ya spent half a day and 20 gallons of gas doing it.
Most of us know areas well enough to know when the area holds fish.
We just don't have the patience to wait for the fish to feed like our ancestors did.

Great points Eman
When I wade I wear and old pair of tennis shoes, some old shorts (in your brother's case they would be pink! HaHa!!) a shirt and a an old baseball cap I don't mind gettin wet and slimy. Use some sparkle beetles, a topwater and maybe some livies. That's usually all you need. Some of that new stuff may be "necessary" but it all comes down to your knowledge and experience where and when to go.
Gotta love the fact that some of these "pros" spend all that money and don't catch squat and you got some guy in a kayak, jon boat, and or just bank fishing and they got's a cooler full.

Great post eman,I could not agree more! I find myself buying some of the newest fad baits, but always stick to oldschool like salty grubs. Pack of 100 for 15 bucks, and they last.

Are you peolpe just jealous? I have never been to "W" Lake but I know over here on the east side(Delacroix, Hopedale, Shell Beach) you have your weekend biffs that are as you describe. However, just because someone has the best things doesn't mean they aren't down to earth and worked hard to get it. I don't have squat but a family member of mine turned a $1000 loan into a $50million a year company. And I am fortunate enough that I get use his 24' boat with powerpole and 300 yammi(merc sux) + more.
I would much rather be in the woods. It the same thing with hunting. Scentlock, etc. I own a mid-level rifle and shoot cheap bullets. I do have a good warm set of outerwear because it is just BETTER than the cheap crap. Same applies to houses, cars, trucks, restaurants.......

It is pretty dang funny now when you see every single fisherman wearing the exact same thing though = Costas, Columbia shirt, and visor, every single one!

I know rich guys with 40,000 dollar boats and top of the line gear who can catch fish with the best....a mans equipment (good or bad) should not be the face of his abilities....I know a black guy who fishes out of BSM in a wooden cypress skiff with a 25 evinrude pulled behind his 1980's ford pick up who has more knowledge of fishing speckled trout in his left Armpit hair than 90% of the fisherman out of BSM...
