Are ya sure it is an overheat alarm.

A neighbor has had similar problem 2 times in the last year and called me to rescue him. It turned out to be low oil alarm. The merc has 2 oil tanks and the one in the motor ran out of oil. They just checked the external tank.

The alarm on it was a continuous beep also.

Had that happen in a my dad's bass boat, the one tournament i fished by myself and not with my tourney partner, alarm started going off, thought it was over heat, turned out to be low oil, had me freaked out, but then i was good to go.

Not as hard as it looks to do the valve. It all comes off in one piece when you take the 5 bolts out. Get the merc gasket set and you will be good to go. I will get you part numbers tomorrow for the job

Do you carry the parts? If so can you ship them to me in Lafayette? Would love to give you the business.
