Gun registration question

Just bought a Glock 19 at the gunshow in Lafayette last weekend, and I'm curious about the registration. I was under the assumption, that the paperwork that was done by the dealer, included automatic gun registration, along with the background check. But someone just told me thats not correct, that the dealer does NOT do the gun registration.In fact he went as far as to say registration really wasnt necessary. Is this correct, and if so, what is the proceedure to register? Thanks.
