Default Intracoastal Canal 5-27

I knew it was gonna be windy so decided to try something different. Took some carb nets with my to try and get a few crabs for bait to try something new. I figured my best bet to keep from getting beat to death in the boat was to stay in the Intracoastal. Caught a few crabs and went west away from the launch maybe a half mile or so. Put a couple lines out with the kids. Got slightly distracted changing my youngest's diaper and felt something bump me in the back. Turned around to see my new rod and reel go flying off the deck in a hurry. Pouted about it for about ten minutes then put another rod out with a good grip on it.a short while later this monster decided he wanted to eat on the half of a crab I had out and we had a good fight. Only fish on this trip, but it was a blast. Definitely gonna do the crab thing again. Was hoping for more action, but it was my first trip. I now know more than I did before. Not sure of exact size/weight, but I'd guess between 40-50lbs.

Gonna eat it. TBH, only had a few worms in his tail. Lot less than expected. I was hoping for a big red. Either way it was a good fight. I will definitely be doing it again

Where did you launch? It's not my type of fishing. Just curious as to where something that large can be caught in the ICW.

T-Boo, I launched at the park by HWY 27 Bridge. Went west maybe a mile. There was some kind of structure on the bank that looked like an old canal or weir that cannot drive through into Black Lake on left as you drive west. I stopped on west side of that and anchored about 20 feet from the bank. I was trying to stay out of the wind so I was on south side of canal in water about 3-5 feet deep where I anchored and just cast out towards the middle. Fishing on bottom.

Cool man. I was just wondering which part of the ICW.
I keep threatening myself to try catfishing in there (I launch by the Gibbstown Bridge near Creole).
I'm mainly a bassin' guy, but good fishing is good fishing, to me.
Thanks.

I have never been on that side of the lake. My biggest reason for going where I did was because I wanted to get out of the wind. I knew I could get close to a bank and not get blown around too much there. Makes bottom fishing easier. As far as catfishing, I couldn't tell you. I had inquired about the use of crabs for fishing, and was told to fish on bottom where there is some current movement. Not bad for my first time trying and I will be doing it again I am sure.
