The purpose is obtain good handling in the water. I skipped the swim by step and regret it big time. It helps tremendously on far water retrieves.

You no the answer grasshoppa but I will bite anyway; besides teaching the dog to wait on the cast, swim by creates control in an environment that is foreign to the dog. Modern training programs are built to ultimately get to swim by, which is control. You cannot have a "non slip retriever" without this step. Gave has been in the program 5 months and progressed each and every one of them, sometimes slowly but always steadily. Retriever training is not a sprint, slow methodical progress is preferred over start stop training. Some are faster, some are slower and hopefully they all finish. I did not start this with me in mind but for everyone who has a dog they are training or plans to one day train their own dog. Please, Please!!, ask questions no matter how dumb you think they are. There are no dumb questions and I don't know all the answers but want to help anyone having problems. If you plan to use a trainer, go watch him train, watch multiple trainers train and get references. If a pro doesn't push references move on to someone else. I refer more dogs to other trainers than I train, pm me if you need a reliable and honest trainer. I can tell you what to look for in a trainer with no strings attached.
