Default Place to teach a beginner in the BR area?

Anyone know some good places to teach someone how to fish within 1.5 hours of Baton Rouge that wouldn't require a boat? My girlfriend wants to learn, and I have fished all my life, but I don't own a boat or know where to go. Should I try one of the BREC lakes, or is there somewhere better near by?

Never fished here but been there a few times and there were folks fishing. Pretty sure they rent or let you use their fishing poles there, its catch and release

The lsu lakes have fish but finding them can be an issue. As for just catching fish, hit up the backside of the levee and fish for catfish in the river. Be careful wherever you go and make sure you're not on posted property. Also, head west to the Tamar maroguin exit. You can fish the levee near the boat ramp there.

Take the interstate to Gonzales, get off on hwy 44 go south take a right go to river road. Follow the levee South peeking over the top every chance ya get. There are some great bar pits there easy bank fishing for perch or tight lining cat fish. Good place for a pic nic. The river is so low its kinda hard to get to the water now but the pits hold water close to the levee and offer lots easer access. just walk careful cause some banks can be soft.

Every accessible place I tried to fish the LSU lakes was extremely shallow.

Yeah lsu lakes are very shallow. I'm pretty sure that you could walk across the whole lake at most chest deep. Still fish in there though.

In my younger days, I usta pic nic on the lake banks and tight line catfish. The lakes are shallow and flat and ya never knew which way the fish would run when he bit. As often as not he might go sideways or twords you. Also being shallow In heat waves I remember several major fish kills in the lakes over the years. Back in the day they were a great place to pick up co-eds though and full of cat fish on acounta no-one fished them. This was back in the day so I aint sure if they still have cat fish but they usta be very plentiful.

Here's a list of spots for good bank fishing in the BR area:
LDWF Waddill Education Center - open Tues-Sat to 5pm
BREC pond - Perkins Park - Kenilworth
BREC pond - Greenwood Park - Baker
BREC pond - Palimino Park - Central
BREC pond - Blackwater Area - Central
BREC pond - Zachary Community Park
BREC pond - Forest Park
BREC pond - North Sherwood Forest
BREC pond - Central Community Park
Lamar-Dixon pond - Gonzales
North Park - Denham Springs

There's some great bank fishing in New Orleans City Park and Bayou St. John in case you're interested in taking your GF on an enjoyable day in the Big Easy (my daughter likes those kind of trips).

The main thing is if you find a farm pond find the owner and ask permission. I would start her off in a good stocked pond so she knows what a bite feels like. You on the right track, good luck!
