I have used UA all over the world - through all types of climates and weather - ain't nothing better. It works especially good here in Louisiana where it will wick the sweat off you, dry fast, and keep you warm even when wet. Couple it with a lightweight rain jacket/wind breaker and you will be set for anything mother nature throws at you here.

Cabela's used to sell thermals that had some silk in them. I bought 'em back in the 90's when I lived in Denver and they were great for skiing, fishing, whatever. Still have 'em. If it's 32 or below, they go on. Along with the UA.

north face is known as some of the best cold weather gear in the world. expensive, but you get what you pay for. But it depends on what you need it for - i.e. it's probably overkill for our neck of the woods. i was just looking at both brands 10 mins ago -outerwear I'd go with northface and for layering i'd go with ua. my 2 cents.
