Default fax machine

Can I hook up a fax machine at my house without adding an extra phone line?

It works. Before you buy anything, check out the HP all-in-ones. It's a fax, color printer, and color copier. You can set it to answer your phone on the 4th ring and I believe stop with a code from another phone when you pick up. I have one and just plug it in when I need to receive a fax. Works great. You can even set it to receive to memory and put a memory stick or thumbdrive in it. Check it out.

Salty, I use a an HP Officejet 4315w All-in-one out here at the shop and it seems to do a pretty good job. Prints in all colors, scans and faxes.

You can use one line. You just have to know that you are to be recieving a fax and hit the fax button when it rings in. You can also leave it on fax but you have to turn off andy sort of voicemail because it will likely pick up before the fax does.

HP All-in One, If set up right you can recieve faxes and have a sperate answer machine with your phone all working at the same, fax is recognized within two or three rings therefore allowing answering machine to work after 5 rings or so.

Does it make your computer run a lot slower? We had it and everything was slow as can be then we would take it out it would be normal again.

Salty, I do communications work...mostly oilfield telephone and internet. Yes you can use the same line, but what we do to seperate it is use a device called "The Stick". It's a small white box, probably 1.5"x2"x8", that seperates voice calls from fax calls. If it's a fax it goes straight to your fax machine and if it's a voice call it goes straight to your phone. If you pick up your phone while a fax is going through it doesn't interrupt anything, you just hear a dead line. Where you located? I could probably drop one off to you if I'm in the area.
