Default Road Side Smoker...

In true Coonass fashion, I am always looking to the side of the road to see what "treasures" I can find. This time I hit the jackpot on Liberty Farm Road! I came across this #22 Old Smokey which in South Louisiana is just as sought after as the Weber Kettle grill, hell, it even had the extended legs! Granted, it was in pretty rough shape, but a new set of handles, hardware, and a new grill got it back up and running. There was a large hole in the side that needed to be dealt with though.

I found a piece of sheet metal to use for a patch and ordered a 1350 Watt heating element and thermostat online.

With plans of only using this Old Smokey for smoking, the 1350 Watt element has plenty of power and is more than capable of maintaining 275°F which is the highest smoking temperature that I plan to use, anything higher will be handled on my Weber gas grill.

To handle the smoke, I turned to the A-Maze-N Pellet Smoker which is capable of creating over 12 hours of smoke off of only 1 pound of wood pellets and can handle everything from cold smoking (<100°F) to hot smoking (>150°F).
As they say, one man's trash, is another man's smoker!

Nice, Amazin make some nice smoking product for very cheap. You can actually use it in a gas grill. Where did you buy the element from?

Yea, I love the smoker, it works great. I found the heating element on Ebay, there are lots of options but not many of them have the thermostat built in.

I love old smokey pits. light for camping tall for drunk chickens, and all parts can be had at most any big hardware or sporting goods store.

x100^^^ My brinkman dome needs a new element, an adjustable one like yours would be a huge improvement.
