Default Another Gobbler Down

Called one up for my buddy Saturday morning. Was his first bird ever. Before he arrived off the roost a hen showed up and stayed right in our laps. Then he came in full strut and gobblin and the whole show. He tortured my buddy bad though, took forever to make his way down in front of the gun barrel. My buddy was shaking like a leaf. He gobbled one time about 30 yards away and my buddy jumped. He finally made it around to where my bud could get a shot and he made a good one. It was awesome. He is ruined for life. 2 year old, 9 inch beard and 3/4 spurs.

Nice! My buddy got one yesterday afternoon on our place. Is there such thing as a bearded hen? Think I have heard of it. Because it looks just like a hen but had a 7" beard. Smallest turkey I have ever seen too. Might have weighed 12lbs. Head looks like a hen, no spurs. I have been hunting hard but the birds I have been messing with are slick. I can't get them to come in. I have tried everything!

Yes I think it was a bearded hen. Oh well. Wasn't me! I wasn't with him. And I don't shoot jakes, so even though I would have thought it was male probably, I would have passed it.

You sure? I might be wrong but I thought the law stated "gobblers only"....statewide.

You are correct, it is gobblers only, and a bearded hen is not a gobbler. Hens are legal to shoot in Texas, but only during deer season.

On the other hand, it is illegal to shoot a turkey on the roost in Texas, but legal in Louisiana..........complicated!!!!!!

Sure about what? Didn't I say a bearded hen was illegal? As in, not legal to kill.
