If the smell is there in the morning the boat is for sale!
Try dumping a bag of fresh coffee grounds in it and leave it a day or so. Truckers use that method to get the smell of chicken blood out of their reefers after a haul.

I think the smell is gone. Went outside this morning and sniffed around the entire boat for a few minutes (looked like a rutting buck) and didn't smell it. Told the wife I needed to go run it to make sure the smell doesn;t come back. Going fishing.
I usually clean fish on Friday or Saturday afternoon. I have no place to dump the crap that is left over so I put them back in the icechest and dump ice on it till Tuesday morning when trash truck comes. Well if I end up drinking a little to much on Saturday night I end up sleeping in on Sunday and putting ice on the fish is usually last thing I think about. I don't try to ,but it happens all to often.

Cody, Arm and Hammer Baking soda. Get a big box and sprinkle the whole thing in there, then close it up. I learned this after Katrina when dealing with the nastiness in the fridges and freezers. Only last week, someone left some formerly live scrimps in an ice chest at my camp. I didn't have a lot of room in the boat and I had emptied the chest earlier that day, so I just stowed it in the camp. It's been darn hot lately. The smell hit me when I opened the door. I busted out the baking soda. This was Monday. I was out there until today. I opened the box before I left and there was only the faintest odor. It'll be gone by Saturday when I get back.

Someone mentioned charcoal. It will do great, but get lump charcoal, not the briquettes. For heaven's sake, not the kind with lighter fluid in it. Put it in a towel and bash it up with a hammer. This exposes more surface area and allows the charcoal to do its work.

I dump fish guts/heads in the water all the time. Never heard about any laws against it. All the old coonasses I know do it too.
Just don't do it next to someone's house or camp.
I have frozen leftovers till trash day, but never fish guts. I try to clean them somewhere else when possible.

I always put fish leavings in the freezer for use as crab bait. I just recently found out that using game fish carcasses as crab bait was illegal in Texas. Talk about a stupid law. Now I have to throw it all away.

thanks for the ideas, guys. I did bleach for 2 nights and Mr.Clean for one night and the smell is gone as best as I can tell. I haven't closed the lid for a night yet though. I still cant get the indention of the fish out. I think it is now part of my boat.

At least now you'll never scratch and go home empty handed.

Here's what I did with the refrigerators and the freezer after Rita. After the whole bleach routine, I spread a whole bag of charcoal briquets all over in the frig and let is sit for a couple of weeks. We stayed in Arkansas with family. It still had a lingering odor but it was much, much better. The plastic in an ice chest holds odors more than the metal in a frig. Briquets are easy enough to try. Activated carbon would probably be better.
