Hummingbird GPS
I have always been a Lowrance GPS/Fish Finder user.. I'm making the switch to Hummingbird to pair it up with Ipilot TM. So my questions is which Hummingbird unit is better than the other. Currently I have been looking at the
Humminbird Helix 7 SI and the Humminbird HELIX 9 DI. Any insight is greatly appreciated.. |

I have the Helix 9 SI on my new boat and it's a very nice unit. Very bright screen, clear picture, extremely easy to operate, and it is a substantial upgrade over the previous generation Humminbird units. I've had 4 different Humminbird units on 4 different boats in the last 5 years, and the Helix is by far my favorite of all of them. I'm running a Navionics Platinum chip in it also and it looks very nice. I do not have it synced with my iPilot, however.

I always prefer to have the largest screen I can get (afford). Makes it easier to view and take advantage of all the great information the unit puts out. I am very partial to the side imaging. Very clear and spot on. Pairing my sonar and side imaging with some great charts (i run plat+ and nav+) makes for a great, complete unit that you can get the most out of.

I just put a helix 10 Mega on my boat and love it. Of course I was upgrading from an old garmin 498 but still. The mega imaging has been awesome. Check out this picture of fish as i drifted around black lake.

I've always had this question about fish on a graph, how do you know where the fish are in relation to your boat?

I'm still new with the side imaging so don't get me lying but essentially it's like this. the centerline on the screen is the centerline of your transducer, The black you see to either side is the water column and the first bit of orange is the bottom contour. From there if you imagine it's a piece of paper and folded it out that would be the bottom picture. It's a very thin line not a cone image like a 2d transducer. But you can easily tell obviously left from right and then distance from the boat away. In the case above roughly 45 feet. What I do is if i'm trolling and see maybe a patch of reef or possible set of fish stacked up then i'll move the cursor and mark the spot then turn the boat and check it again. It really isn't something to actively hunt fish although, like above it gives you great vision to where some might be hanging out.
