The laws of supply and demand are always in play. Lots of demand and little supply will lead to the hiring of engineers with more poorly documented qualifications. Little demand and oversupply will make the process more competitive.

There is no contradiction in the idea that under some conditions a GED plus some college engineering coursework and a decade+ of relevant experience can sometimes be sufficient to land a job with engineering in the title, but under more challenging conditions and job requirements, one might need a good GPA in addition to an engineering degree.

There are a variety of different situations being discussed, and my comments were addressed to different situations.

With a process plant degree you can get a job as an operator straight out of school, or at least the chances are much better compared to a student coming straight out of school with an instrument degree.
