4/25/10 trip
Well, did not place in the IFA Kayak Tour but still had a great time seeing old friends and getting on the water. I ended up making the drive down to Breton Sound Marina and put the kayak in at safe light. First stop was the damn to see how the action was as I wanted to get a good trout and then procede to look for reds. Thank God I had some good spray with plenty deet! The skeeters and gnats were so thick at the damn they carried me and the kayak into the marsh and robbed me of a quart of blood! Water was gin clear in the MRGO and the Damn. Surprised me to see an alligator in the 10' range patroling around in the middle of the MRGO. I was looking for trout so first bait tried was a Marsh Works jig head and soft bait. Any color you through would get hits but felt like plenty trash fish mixed in. I made a short paddle to land and tried the drop off and same thing. Right now the whole area is loaded with bait fish, really loaded! I then proceded to try the flag at the point of the MRGO. Water was beautiful there and I had one good run and a couple small hits. I finally decided to head into the marsh and look for mr redfish. On the way in I found more clean water and alittle movement. I through out a Marsh Works chugger cork and killa squilla and the trout started pounding it as fast as it hit. I tried hard baits and topwater but the 14-16" specs would just blow it up. I even threw a gold spoon and caught a spec. I took some pictures of the specs for the tourney and left them alone and went into the short grass looking for reds. Now, marsh is loaded with shrimp and baitfish as far as you can see. I thought this was going to be easy nailing red after red looking for a brute... wrong! I paddled and paddled and never saw a blowout or anything. I blind casted over all the oyster beds with everything I had. I had one red that gave me the finger when I blind casted my Marsh Works spoon and I thought I had snagged a branch. I yank back and and not a branch but a big blowout and he is gone! Ouch!!! Nothing else to show for that but had a good time anyway. Next stop is PPVII may 15th and IFA Empire June 20th |
