Default Live Shrimp

Any of you guys catch live shrimp with cast net other than at weirs? I know where the shrimp pile up and lots are caught in area with trawl. You think baiting a few places and marking waiting 15 or so minutes would get a few dozen shrimp? I read articles about guys doing this on east coast.

Don't have to go all the way to Fred's for that. Minnows don't work as well in vermillion bay, for me at least. Maybe I'm not holding my mouth right.

i don't know why live shrimp is not available anywhere near vbay. seems like there would be a market for that but apparently there isn't since no one sells em.

There isn't even a store open in Cypremort Point. Trawling isn't allowed in bay at night so it'd be tough to have bait before daylight. We usually pull a trawl for a few minutes but it's too much for afternoon run.

Matt- try between the piers, as shrimpers cannot get in there, but use an old net to be sure there is no debris on the bottom. Also may try in big marina on Point, caught a few shrimp there before.

if you know where there are usually shrimp, get some pogy meal, put it in a small bucket, wet it enough to make some dough balls and chunk em in the water, come back after 10 mins and throw your net. they will pile up on the pogey meal.

Can do this in a few diff spots.

We would use canned dog food. Tie a string to it and drop it beside the pier. worked very well

Our local feed stores have it. Range pellets work also, easier to use.

The way they bait shrimp on the east coast is they get fish meal and clay and roll it into large balls or patties. They drop these down on the bottom and mark the spot with a pole. They come back later and cast net over them. Night is best. The clay keeps the meal from floating away and hold all the bait in one place so you know exactly where it is when you throw your cast net.

Inside the Delcambre Canal to the right where they catch the flounders. Usually catch some good ones there!
