I wanted to pick up corpsman was my third choice actually but that ship date was for 2013 and I wasn't waiting that long to leave. First choice was actually Seabee which also opens in 2013 and again, I didn't want to wait.

I chose Airman undesignated which basically means for the first month after boot camp, I'll be chippin paint and able to chose from alot of jobs in the aviation field.

I'm sure you already know this but....... Get EVERYTHING your recruiter says in writing!!! Good luck and congrats.

O yea. And pick a rate (Navy's version of an MOS) that transitions over into a good civilian job. Airdale side has a lot of them.

Iron Man we have 2 former Navy Hull Technicians that work for us on the Quality Control Side of the ship building, they now know the ins and outs of Military Vessels. You could always some out of the Navy as a Marine Surveyor making petty good money. Another option would be electronics, with the marine industry in South LA they always looking for Electronis guys. Also look into aviation things as well. My cousins BF is in the Marines as a HElicopter MEchanic, he gets finishes his 4 years in a few months and aleady has job offers with a couple different companies. Just don't go do 4 years and come out working a job you could have worked straight out of HS.

I think if I like it enough, I'll stay in and make it a career. My girlfriend wants to career in the Air Force or Navy and retire with more years in than her dad had which was 26 years worth. He retired as a Senior Master Sargeant in Combat Communications and he scares the ^*&% out of me.

I got a print out of some different ratings and it shows how they are undermanned/manned adequately/overmanned and the only one undermanned is the AW ratings so the potential for promotions and bonuses come faster.
