We bait ours with processed cheese from la net and twine. When the fish r running we don't put anything in them. I'm sure a few others will chime in on the sets. I'm usually just a deck hand so that's about all I know. Good luck!

Sometimes I bait it with cheese from the Fish Net Company. Some times I use dry cat food. Put some in a bait bag and tie it in the back part of the net. Is it a true hoop net or wire net? What size?

What body of water are you wanting to fish? Bait is not needed when they are running in late march thru may any other time I bait.

If you are putting them in a lake, it pays to bait. The commercial fishermen in Lake Verret use either cottonseed or soybean cake in the warm months and processed cheese in the cold months. They say that way they catch almost exclusively channel catfish. Adding any fish smell to the bait catches blue catfish. Fish oil, chopped pogies or something like that will increase the catch of blue catfish. They also say that the more bait you put, the more fish you catch. I've seen them put 18 bags of soybean cake in one hoopnet.
For flathead catfish I don't think they bait. I think they put them in the outside bend of the river where there is a cut bank. Good luck. Let us know how you do. |

my dad used to run about 30 or 40 ranging from 4-6'ters. He mainly fished in bayou decaine and nezpique' (spelling?) around Gennings. It was some deep bayous. he ony ran them in the late fall till spring time, when the water was cold, cuz he would only check them once a week. In the later years, he never really used bait, they would just swim in and fill it up. Usually had some good currents during the winter also. Main thing, and Im sure you know already, is make sure you set it the right way with the current.

you can do it with hoop nets. Before my dad quit, he would bring home hundreds of pounds of cats in 1day of checking. It got to be almost too much trouble to clean.lol |
