Thumbs up Military surplus rifle

I picked up a Mosin Nagant 91/30 quite a few years ago. Bought it mainly because of its history, and basically I just like old guns. For $70 bucks I couldnt go wrong. I have shot it a few times and put it away. I am not one to buy somthing and just let is sit around forever. So I have descided that this could make me a nice varmint rifle with a little work. The ballistics fall somewhere in between a 30.06 and .308. I have slowly modified it a little at a time over the past couple years. I have put a monte carlo sythetic stock on it, bent the bolt handle, installed an over the reciever scope rail, added a couple new safety features, and revently done a trigger job. I have a scope but still need to buy scope rings. Anyone else own one of these? What do you think about it used as a varmint rifle. Once I add a bi-pod I think it will be alright. Will have to remember to take pictures.

I have one in the m44 shoots 7.62x54r. Its shorter than the one you have. Ive been shooting mine alot recently and all I can is that thing is hell when you pull the trigger. Not something you want to shoot more then a few times. And loud too. Every time I shoot everyone at the range turns to see if I am shooting a cannon. I have thought about modifying it to deer hunt but just not sure I want to spend the money to modify a $100 dollar gun. Mine is a 1946 model with original wood stock and built on swing out bayonet.

I have the same gun but its be sporterized, which means the stock is more updated and makes it real fun to shoot. Out of the box it will hit a pie plate open site at 100yrds, I want to bring it to TX and shoot a doe to see what damage it will do.

Yea, I have heard that about the m44. The barrel on mine is like a mile long!!! But, not as bad to shoot. I think so far all I have paid was around $54 bucks for the stock, $23 bucks for the scope mount, and everything else I did myself. Of course the scope itself is always extra with most any rife, and threre was a trigger type safey I paid about $15 bucks for. It makes for a fun project gun I think.

Did you have to do much adjustment when you switched the wood stock to synthetic?

Its a pretty big nasty round. I'm sure it will do alot of damage. I sure would have hated to shoot/get shot by it in WWII

Yea it would suck to be shot with that thing, I have a buddy that sells guns and he says that if you shoot the cheap surplus ammo in them in the dark it will blow fire like never seen

I bought mine off of ebay. I think sportsmansguide.com has them as well. You can get the black or the camo stock.

Ive seen them a few places usually around 70 bucks. Ive been shooting the wolf ammo, all I can find at the gun show. Ive had the shell get stuck a couple times after shooting.
