Default HP Rating?

What formula do dealers use for horse power if boat does not have a rating?

One I found is length x width x 2 - 90 round up to nearest 5. Is this a good guide? Had a dealer tell me he would not sell me the motor I was asking for. Want a 200 using the formula above comes to 214 round up to 215. Seems like I have room to spare. I see bass boats smaller than mine with 250's hanging off the back of them.

I could see a dealer not installing an engine but for them to outright not sell an engine seems silly. You could get them to put it in back your truck and hang it yourself. I know my buddy has a Carolina Skiff rated for a 150 with a 225 that he had to install himself.

What size boat do you have? Is it home made?

how old is the boat.

how much weight can the transom hold? Is very important..

the torque on that 200 vs the old motor could rip off that transom.

you could rebuild the transom to today requirements then you'll be able to hang that 200. on the back.

it's like putting a 500hp motor in an 30-40 year old car something WILL give out , if it isn't reenforced.

like what southern 151 is doing with the mustang restoration.

A 350 couldn't break this transom I promise. Boat is 19.3 x 7.10 Eric Romero built it and it has a life time warranty.

The dealer is likely concerned with liability issues. Some things people sue over make no sense, but if that boat is ever in an accident, a dealer who knowingly sold a motor that am ambulance chasing scumbag lawyer could argue was too powerful for the boat, would likely be facing a lawsuit.

Parties with money attract lawsuits for the most spurious reasons. His insurance company and the motor companies likely have the dealer under contractoral obligations not to sell motors to be used on boats unless it is within the clearly established rating of the boat.

There is not a clearly established rating, don't think the boat will be over powered with a 200. The boat with a 150 2 stroke ran like 47 WOT trying to get a better hole shot and faster cruising speed. A 175 might do it but the formula I found says it should be good with 215 HP.

I think the suzuki 175 will push that boat . even a 150 sho will get you in 50mph range

my 175 moves my bay boat 53mph. so that 175 on a bass boat I'd say 57 to 60 mph.
