Default Best Bait for Reds

I normally use either live or dead shrimp in the spring and summer, never fished for Reds in the winter, is that still the best at this time of the year or is artificial better.

Thanks in advance.

Reds love anything that cost $10 or more.
They crush them, break them, straighten
out the hooks.
They don't normally hit cheap lures. Don't
know why.
So basically, anything that is high dollar.

Half of a crab small enough to fit in their mouth. Tight lined on the bottom like catfishing. Works in dirty water. In clear water go with what ray said; anything flashy and over $10.

For Real..... Best bait that probably caught more reds in the state of LA is a purple with white tail cocahoe....

and for shallow fising add a spinner

Cocahoe cost .4 cents spinner about one dollar

Marsh Works spinners. Those things could pull a truck. I prefer either white or purple and chartruse tails.

1/2 oz marsh works gold spoon.

1/8 to 1/4 oz marsh works jig head with a purple/chart bayou thumper tightlined

Muddy water:

Default Go to redfish color

Great color for both reds & trout. Put it on a spinner for reds.

Dead skrimps will catch reds in any water conditions....plastic is more challenging and less mess. Berkley gulp swim mullet is a close second.

All of the above mentioned will work. Actually busted some reds today on Trinity in muddy water, throwing our chartreuse 1/4oz YM jig heads and Bubble Yum jerk jr's. Water clarity was bad to say the least, but you can tell they didn't have any problem finding em

Dead bait catches Hardheads also.
Artificial gives you less action, but better quality fish.

Default Red on a Kick A

Thank you Will Drost for this video clip. I'm sure he was fishing for Trout and hooked up on some nice reds. Somebody had some "half shell" on the pit later on.
