Default Who plants a spring food plot.....

I am considering planting a spring foot plot on my deer lease. I have never planted in the spring but would like to try it to see if may help hold some game in my area.

My question is to the guys who plant in the spring is, what do you plant? Any tips will be appreciated.

Arrow leaf clover, our biologist on property strongly recommends it, so we've been planting it for probably over 10 years now

Can you find this at the local feed store or do you have to order it.

I'm gonna plant chufa for the turkeys this year for the first time. They say not to plant until May. I'm not sure about other plants.

Iron Clay (Cow peas) are great for deer, just expensive!!!!! The last 50lb sack I bought I liked to have passed out! I asked the dude how much per pea! He didn't think it was funny

I plant them for bow season

Default spring plots

I was hunting between WTR's house and mine and had a sweet little set up . I found out the one thing that's more important than food for keeping the deer around from season to season. Water and enough of it.
During the dry years the creek and the beaver ponds would dry up and the deer would cross the road to another tract of land that has a small river running thru it. The folks that have this tract also plant year round so once the deer went over there for water they didn't need to come back .

We plant iron clay peas, clover, and soy beans during the spring also plant rye too. We try to give them something to feed on year round. We also put corn and protein pellets out until mid August. By doing this we have seen the average body size on all deer increase since we have been planting year round and thus keeping them on our property I just hope we get some water because last year we had a dry year compared to the year before.

I plant lab lab plus and whitetail clover but what they really need comes from pellets. If you feed them pellets, you will need to build some off the ground feeders that are well covered. Make sure your deer have a good water supply.

This is the type of feeder I'm talking about.
