Default Great Weekend at "Camp Throwback"

With our football season over, it was nice to get to the camp and do some hunting. We purchased a old home and have been putting in all of our time there to make it our "getaway" and have not had time to scout. So Saturday was a shot in the dark as to where to put people for a deer hunt. We have over 30 club food plots and several does were taken during the last week for the "special season" of primitive weapons that MS has. (Still not sure the brains behind this one, but we can shoot does and not bucks for a week).

Well, nobody wanted to get up to hunt Saturday after a late night, so I stayed in and got an early start around the camp. Today's priority was the Direct TV hook up, and it went surprisingly well, even getting our local Lafayette stations at the camp in Knoxville, MS so I was pumped - especially knowing we had LSU on TV that night. So we get all our work done for the day, and by 2:30, the kids were asking where we were going to hunt. I pulled the food plot list and picked 3 off the top of my head that were in close proximity to each other which made my job a little easier. Got everyone settled in by 3:15, and I was the last to climb into a stand since I had a half-mile walk. At 5:00, my wife text me that she and her youngest had a yearling on the edge of the woods. After several text messages to make sure he didn't shoot the young deer, I look up to see 3 in my plot. At the same time, her oldest is in another stand down from me with a deer in his plot.

Minutes later, I hear the BOOM of Hayden's 30-30 and I immediately get a text that he dropped her. I got down to make a quick recovery and get back for the LSU game, and Griffin never did get a shot on his, which was nice since I already had one to clean. It was great to have the game on tv, a good meal, and have a deer in the cooler on our first offical hunt of the year!

Sunday morning I hunt a powerline and see a crippled doe cross that has a broken back leg, but too far for me to shoot. Griffin had one bust him in the food plot and never got a shot. All together, with driving in Friday night and hunting 2 hunts we saw over 20 deer, which is more than we saw all of last year in Louisiana. Needless to say, the kids love the new place!

FFF,
Nice trip...Great report...I did the "special season" as well and let my dads 45-70 bark...I'm thinking I need Tommy Johns surgery now...I don't know who hurt more, me or the deer...Like a grenade launcher...
