Grand Isle Offshore - 6/1 and 6/2
Monday, 6/1, we cleared the pass around 6:15 a.m. and headed Southeast at a bearing of 150 degrees. NOAA was right and we were able to cruise at 28 mph in the 1' seas. Pulled up at a rig that we have had success at in past years 37 miles from Bridgeside Marina in approximately 200' of water. Caught our red snapper that average 8-10 lbs. Caught 3 ling that were all between 34" and 40". Also, FishMaster911 caught a stud blackfin tuna that we guessed weighed between 25-30 lbs. Catching a blackfin tuna while dropping down for snapper was a nice surprise. Around noon decided to go check the next rig 5 miles South and added another ling and a few mangrove to the box. 1 of the mangrove weighed in at 9.9 lbs. We left them biting when both our 120 and 90 quart ice chests were full of fish. We need a bigger fish box! |

Day 2 we had the same plan and cleared the pass around the same time.
The seas were rougher, however. I would call them 1-3' which made the ride in the Mak0 19' a bit rough. But, the skies were clear all around and we were still able to run 20-25 mph. We started at the same two rigs then made a move 7 miles South where we found the two vermillion snapper. The fishing wasn't as good but we found some bigger Red Snapper than the previous day, 1 ling, 2 vermillion snapper, 1 mangrove, and a huge croaker! Fishmaster911 also tagged quite a few red snapper as you can see in one of the pictures below. Ended up bringing home a lot of meat and am just taking a break from vacuum sealing my portion now and putting it in the freezer. |

How common is it to catch a BF tuna rig fishing with snapper tackle? We just assumed he was drunk. Definitely was a surprise when we got a look at him next to the boat.

Forgot to mention that most of the fish except for the snapper and tuna were caught on vertical jigs. The snapper and tuna ate cut pogey and cut blue fish.

Heading that way this weekend. First trip offshore with the new boat. Would you want to share what rig you were at? Or the coordinates?

Watch the pop up thunderstorms. We had one pass within 8 miles of us that had a really big water spout on the water for 15-20 minutes. Made us pretty nervous for a bit.
