Anyone have a bass fishing report from Vernon Lake

I was there this weekend. We fished a small tournament. The weights were lower than I expect for this time of year. Now the weekend before I did have a 3 better than 5lbs. The wind really hurt on Sat. All my fish came on a swimbait and horny toad.

I could use some pointers for this lake also. Have a tourney coming up and never been there. Anything would help. Thanks in advance.

If you find a good amount of bait don't write off that there are fish near by. There are SO many shad in that lake. Usually can catch fish shallow any time of year. If you're having a hard time getting bit, flip a speed craw at whatever looks fishy. Fish it like a big pond basically. Not saying you can't catch them deep though.. caught 2 limits and culled close to another limit off the end of one point about 3 weeks ago.

Is there certain areas better than others. I heard it has some really shallow areas that's not worth fishing. I don't want to know your spot but if you can point me in the right direction to start that would help a lot.

South end would be a good place to start. Not as overwhelming as the N ends (so much cover to choose from mainly). Since a smaller/shallower lake, it doesn't take much as far as structure for fish to relate to. If you can handle the wind, the windy banks will usually hold more active fish. The dam is always good for 1 or 2 smaller fish if it has a little chop blowing on it. Like I said if you get frustrated at some point, I would just put the tm on high and flip a speed craw or a small creature bait at everything that looked cool, and take a square bill and run into everything you can. STAY IN THE BOAT LANES. Like in the middle of them lol. Especially if you venture way north.

I fish from a Kayak and tend to stay in the shallower parts of the south end of the lake... I have only fished Vernon 6 times in the past 5 weeks and they were all mediocre days at best...I am by no means a tourney fisherman... I used several Zoom Lizards from 4" to 10" in another brand , watermelon red yielded the best results. I did use my own spinnerbaits with a couple nice 3lbers , I had a twin tail yamamoto grub for a trailer. Jerk baits only yielded small fish less that 1lb, with one exception. I used my LTT rig with some very large 11" worms. only caught one bass in about 30 casts and it was maybe 3.5lbs... Hope this helps and good luck in your up coming tourney. |

Pretty standard stuff. Watermelon red, etc. Shad colored cranks, white/chart spinner baits. It stays pretty dirty up there but it can get muddy at times, done well on junebug type colors when it gets bad. I actually might go Friday since the McDonalds is going on at Toledo then. When is your tourney? |

Is it open to anyone? If so, would you mind giving me some info on it? Might be interested in letting someone take my money..lol
