Marty, its a little hard for me to explain. There are a bunch of videos on You tube that cover how to throw it. I think I would be hard for you to visualize a verbal description any way. It would be for me anyhow...

very good videos on you tube. they even have some for us left handed folks, so we don't have to try and mirror image it.

There are some nice...umm informational videos involving cast nets...but the one i'm talking about learning from is probably not one of those.

The bigger the cast net the more difficult to throw marty IMO if I were you I wouldn't go with anything over 5 feet if you have never thrown a cast net ,and your learning curve will be a whole lot shorter

Marty, as has been said before about this topic on SC, best way is to go to the weirs, start throwing and as you throw "tacos", don't be embarrassed, just ask the old-timers next to you for some tips. You'll be surprised how helpful many will be, but don't expect to be an expert on your first trip. Practice, practice, practice.

I was lucky enough to have a grandpa that taught me to throw and make nets as a kid. The best way to learn is to find someone locally that can show you how. I guess the next best thing is the youtube videos... either way, good luck. I personally throw an 8' for shrimp and a 12' for mullet.

I may be wrong here, but Isn't a 12 footer beyond the legal limit in La? Or is that recreational?
