Anyone know what kind of grass to plant in marsh ponds to attract ducks.

The best grass is widgeon grass . I dont know that you can actually plant it yourself though.

I THINK........you have to harvest what you plant once, then its not baiting......but check DU website or call them to be sure

Look up Chiwapa Millet. This stuff looks to be pretty good. If you have bare ground. Too late for much planting now though I would imagine. To get 'good' plants you really need to manipulate the ground by causing some sort of disturbance like disking. This will favor annual species of plants and weeds which ducks like.

Widgeon grass is the best duck food imo for the marsh also coontail is really good. My brother-n-law did some transplanting for cameron prairre before with coontail. What they did was pull it up by the root and put it in wet burlap sacks and kept them wet. When they got to the ponds they would just step on the roots to bury them in the mud.

if your ponds are tidal you need to block off the water and let them dry out some to about 3 inches then throw some rice. other than transplanting grasses from other ponds you dont have many options. dont feed corn during hunting season it is very easy for someone to see while flying over. molasses works well.

Coontail is an underwater week. I'll take a pic tomorrow if needed. It's common in Toledo.

Just throw rice.. hell the guy behind my house did it during teal season, and will probably do it during big duck season.. not even worth calling on him. Doubt they do anything. So I just let him be.

Those millets work good but they don't last long once the head gets wet. Usually about 14 days is all the food value you can expect out of it. I agree with Trey, widgeon grass in a marsh below 12 parts can't be beat. In fresh water, almost any aquatics that mat up will hold some sort of bird concentration. If is above 12 parts all you can do is get your water LOW (less that 6 inches) and hope for the best. Hope this helps.
