Default A Boat Question

I have a 16foot xpress currently has a 40hp yamaha, i am upgrading to a 70hp johnson, wondering if i would benefit any putting the 70 on a jackplate, i may in the future put some pods to help with flotation for the heavier motor also,

will a jackplate make any difference and if so what? i appreciate any answers from any body with some knowledge in this area

I'm sure a jack plate helps in many ways. It will help you trim and also get that foot out the water. Increase rpm, speed and also help with shallow running. That's the bit of experience I've had.

You will be adding an extra amount of weight and power to the transom by going to a 70 hp on a 16' hull. The boat will operate and perform completely different. A jack plate would probably be beneficial in dialing in maximun performance and boat handling.

Never used them but hear they make quite a difference with a heavy stern.

I talked to a guy who has pods on his boat for getting up in shallow water. He said it makes a difference and he's running a jackplate.

If you put a jackplate that sticks out very far it will make your boat sit lower in water due the extra weight hanging out off your boat, this is where pods would help in order to keep back of boat floating higher in water.... do you run in really shallow water or what is your reasons for pods in your mind

Default floatation

was thinking about them mainly for extra flotation for the heavier motor, but i do occasionally run in some shallow water, i fish around the marshes of vermillion bay sometimes i get into shallow water

From what I have heard, pods will cause boat to perform like a tunnel hull in rough water and make it harder to reverse....
