Default Youth gun recommendation

Looking to get my boys a rifle and a shoot gun this year. What's a good gun to get for them, they are 7 and 8. The only gun they shoot was my 22.

I have a 22 but looking for a shoot gun and maybe a rifle.

I want to take them hunting this year.

Whatever you do, don't get one of those youth crack barrel single shot shotguns. Those things kick like mules. The 20 gauge kicks more than my 12 auto. Semi auto is the way to go. Just remember to only load one shell at a time like a single shot to teach them gun safety first.

Mossberg makes a 308 youth, with extra spacers you can add to the but of it when they get older, my got my nufue one when he was 7, and he's a big time city boy. He ten now and can somedays out shoot me!!! But gun safety is the first /most important thing!!!

Also do not start them out with a .410. That's just like shooting a rifle. Get em a 20 ga youth pump.

A .223 rifle would be great.

TriStar has a nice youth 20 gauge auto with a extra adult stock. I've bought one for both of my youngest sons. Excellent gun for a good price.

for a deer rifle i bought my boys the marlin youth. you can get it in 243 or 7mm-08
i wouldn't recommend getting the scope with it, the scope is not good quality. i put a nikon
prostaff on it and it shoots great.

started my son at 8yrs old on my crack .410 single shot... no problems, he loves the gun! now he's 12 and on a 20gauge semi, he said the 20 is nothing cause he was used to the kick on the .410. as far as rifle, he has a crack243 youth that my wife shoots as well... both love the gun!

I highly recommend the savage youth model bolt action rifle. I bought 2 in .243 for my daughters. The accutrigger is the best tool on the market for teaching young shooters to squeeze and not jerk the trigger. With a lot of range time my 12 y/o and 10 y/o girls have both dropped deer and hogs at 200yds. I also highly recommend barnes tipped tsx bullets. We started out shooting soft point lead bullets, but, in.243, the exit wounds were not large enough to track blood from hogs that were hit perfectly. The barnes bullets in .243 blow holes comparable the soft points out of my.270. Just gotta find somebody to load em for you. The tipped tsx's are not available as a ready to shoot cartridge.

7mm-08 is a sweet sweet rifle, very little kick and accurate as can be. I got my wife one a few years back and even bought myself one I liked it so much.

.243 is a good round too

I had a 20 gauge crack barrel for my first shotgun and it kicked like a mule, be careful going that route

I got a 870 20 gauge for my first shotgun.

If you could find a marlinxl7, look for .243 or 7-08. Bought one from a guy on here who's name I forgot in 30-06 and I still shake my head when I remember trading it for a pistol. Great rifle.

Have you thought about a Thompson Center? Not sure of the model or whatever. My uncle has one and has 6 or 7 different barrels for it. Including a 20 gauge shotgun barrel.

For a deer hunting rifle, I have been shooting a Rem. model 700 in .243 cal. for many many years and killed many deer with it. Most of the deer dropped dead shooting 100 gr. Cork-loc bullets.

But for a youth rifle, I think a 7m-08 might be a better choice because for this caliber you can buy a managed recoil load to start off the boys shooting the rifle.

For a scope, I replaced my scope a few years ago and still have the old Bushnell scope sitting in a drawer. It is a 3 x 9 x 40 power scope. I used it for 20 years and never had a problem with it, I just thought I would get an upgraded scope. You can have it if you want it.

I have a Stevens model 200 in 7mm-08 I bought as a backup for the same caliber Browning. Several bears and black-tail deer here will attest to the potency of that caliber. It has very little recoil and still packs a good amount of energy out to 300 yards. Zero for 200 yards and at four hundred it is only 8 inches low.

870 youth 20 ga., I wouldn't suggest semi-auto for first gun. the pump will slow them down and help make there shots count. And for a rifle, I'd say the 7mm-08. Won't go wrong with either of these.

Alpha,

I have a seven year old boy so I have been where you are. He started out shooting a .22. I then bought him a .410 and for a while he was scared to shoot it. He finally got over that and now shoots it like a champ. He also shoots a .223 really well. I bought my daughter a youth model .223 and he shot that really well once he used to it. I can see a definite diffence in his ability to accuratley shoot the .223 versus the 7mm-08 we have.

Gerald makes a good point, you can buy reduced recoil ammo for the 7mm-08 from Remington. My brother has used that with his daugter and she has dropped several deer in her tracks with that load. Hornady makes a reduced load for the .243 now, it's a 90 grain version.

If you are going to buy them a 20 guage buy a semi automatic for reduced recoil. There is a model out there called a SA-20 that is used by several brands - I know Mossberg uses it and by all accounts it's a reliable gun. I don't know if that is the same model that Tristar uses but it sounds like it.

By the way, my daughter dropped a deer in it's tracks with her .223 so no problems there.

I was watching my boy shoot his .223 the other day and he was jerking the trigger. I came to realize that the trigger pull was so stiff he can to yank with his little fingers to get it to fire. We immediately corrected this by having him insert his fingers deeper onto the trigger so that he was pulling the trigger with middle of his finger instead of the tip.
