Default 22 or 223

Buying one for my dad for Christmas. Just for shooting/playing. no hunting. Which one should I go with and where to get?

I don't know too much about these...

I think you'd definitely be better off with a .22 for that.

Depends on your ammo budget and preferred range.

If you're not dead set on either round i like the 17 hmr for the type of shooting that you described

He lives on LC. Will most likely be shooting at a range.

Ruger 10/22..... the upgrades are endless and they are fun and somewhat cheaper to shoot.

I know if I was getting a free gun I would take a 223 all day.

That said I have a ruger 10/22 and you can have fun with that thing all day, for a fraction of the cost.

I would agree with the .22 or .17. I just recently bought a .17 (always loved them), I bought a Savage with a nice scope all for around $300. .223 is a great gun but can get a little expensive if its just for target practicing at a range. Also it gets fun launching lighter rounds farther than they should go and listening for that "ping" of the target. We have a blast having competitions seeing you is more accurate down range with the lighter rounds.
