Churn Burns Point 23/8/10

The River is down so I figured its time to make a trip to the point. So I headed down to Burns Point last evening and fished a few of my spots. I limited on Reds and Drum in 2 hours. Threw back prob around 15 more nice reds and around 12 Sheepheads. I am sure the specks are around Marsh Island too right now. Will head our there later in the week to see whats up when I have more time. Here are a few pics. Beautiful color on the reds.

I fillet them out and fix the same as the reds. I can't really tell the difference in flavor. I think the biggest thing about cleaning fish is not to leave any blood on the meat. I don't worry about loosing a little meat. I just don't want those blood lines in my fish. I think that is what makes fish taste bad/oily/fishy. I do the same with all my fish. I think that is why so many people like specs and small catfish because they don't have those blood lines.

when i clean specks, i always peel off that little oil gland on the top of the fillet, its the thin strip with the grain of meat going the opposite way, makes a huge difference

ive heard drum were just as good, just boney

Same here I like sheep heads too but the ones I caught were not to big. I didn't feel like bothering with them. I have a freezer full of fish. Something I have tried in the past with big sheep head is to scale and head them then boil them in a pot with crab boil. Taste just like crab meat. Put the fish in a patty like a crab cake, fry and mmmmmmm mmmmmm mmmmmm!

That's about right, we went there on the 14th and he said they still wouldn't be open when teal opens in mid September! We didn't go ride to the launch but we talked to the guy in the trailer that made damn sure we paid our $1 just to turn around in the driveway .

I have a sticker on my truck for all St. Mary Parish boat launches. You pay one price at in Sept and can use all boat launches in the Parish with no charge all year. I just drove threw and put in. Didn't see anyone camping. When I got back I didn't have any dirty letters on my truck. So I guess it is open.
