I let mine soak in hot soapy water for a hour or two then kept spraying oil on it and trying to wiggle it open until I finally broke thru the corrosion

That is my main problem with my Lews, it's very difficult to get the side plate off for cleaning and lubricating. It casts very well but I think that I will stay with my Shimanos in the future.

I gave up on it last night. Will try again today. It's very dirty so needs a good cleaning.

Just switch to Shimano and all your reel problems will go away.

Depends on what model you are talking about, but the most important thing is Shimano will out last any Lews any day.

I gotcha I have 7 or 8 Shimano reels from the Curado to the new Metainum and they have never given me no problems in saltwater. My core 50's where bought in 2009 and they are still working perfect.

What do you do as far as cleaning. I feel that's my problem. We'll I'm sure that's it

A guy that has a reel cleaning business that use to work for shimano told me the worst thing to do is spray them down with water, that just puts the salt further into the reel and keeps water in the reel which is bad. He told me to use windex, just spray the reel down with the windex then use baby wipes or a clean cotton rag to clean the reel. I have been doing this for 2 years or so without any problems. It is a good idea to break the reel down every 3 or 4 trips to clean inside a little, they have a youtube video of shimano techs showing basic reel cleaning real easy to do.

I did a good job on my Curado 50 E so I jumped on the 200 G. Took the handle off and the star drag when whoopee out poops a tiny little spring and post. In the video he said that wouldn't happen, oh well, got it all back together and it still works, Yea! Have you ever seen someone in another boat cast on a cold clear day? There is a fine spray of water that comes off the line as it leaves the reel. After a day of fishing, I have little doubt that salt water has permeated some of the remote recesses in your reel. |
