The following is a news release from The Southwest Louisiana Fishing Club:

The Southwest Louisiana Fishing Club has canceled the 73rd Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo scheduled for the July 4th weekend. The Rodeo will not be held this year due to the BP oil spill which has resulted in the closing of much of the fishing areas by the National Marine Fisheries & La. Wildlife & Fisheries. The closed areas are changing from day to day as large amounts of oil move inland. The expenses of the having the Rodeo and the uncertainty of being able to fish would place an undue financial burden on the SWLA Fishing Club.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause for those people who have supported our rodeo or participated in our rodeo over the years. As much as we did not want to cancel this event, we felt it was necessary for the club's survival. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people whose livelihoods are directly impacted by this catastrophe.

I'm sure you'd be giving a lecture on oil spills that day anyway so, you wouldn't have been able to make it!

This is really getting out of hand. First, the star gets pushed back now the rodeo is cancelled. All because there is a oil spill that is affecting areas where some people fish. If any of you have ever fished the rodeo before you know that the boundaries are anywhere you want to go as long as you make it back by weigh-in on the last day. But, because some of the boats that usually place BIG every year are out of Venice or Grand Isle there will be no rodeo. I thought this was the SWLA fishin club rodeo not the venice fishin club. I am sympathetic to whats goin on on the east side of the state, but in case some people havnt noticed this is not affecting but about one third of our coastline. Two thirds are still fishable. I am really angry at how the news media only is showing small areas of marsh with oil and reporting llike it is all of louisiana. If you go to NOAA's website there are satellite photos updated almost daily showing the oil drifting east. the majority of it is from the mississippi delta east.
