Have any of you ever bought a used Ice Machine?

okay with it? regret it??

looking for a 300lb machine to keep in my shop for fishing and home use.

Had a flaker till the compressor bombed out. Was gonna get another till they put up a bulk machine 4 blocks from my house. $3.00 for 40lbs. My machine cost me that in 2 days of running.

Just do a lot of research because they are expensive to operate..

If/when you do get an ice machine, do yourself a favor and buy a "Manitowoc."

Much more reliable and durable than knock offs. They are a little more pricey, but well worth the cost.

Let your fingers do the walking and check in the yellow pages for commercial restaurant supply businesses and shop around. Also ask if they or anyone they know has any used machines for sale. If you know of any restaurants that recently closed in your area, check with them too.

Scotsman commercial ice machines are pretty good too.
If you keep any them clean, using a good ice machine cleaner, they will last.

There used to be a M&A Rest. Supply also, but not sure if they are still in business.
There was a big rest. supply on the West side of Acadian Thru Way just before Johnston St. in Lafayette.

i have never had any problems with mine.........word of advice if you are not putting it in the airconditioning. don't buy it to save money mine made my electric bill go up about 50 to 75 bucks....... I use mine alot though we fill up water coolers every morning in mine. they are more for convience than to save money.


Now what to look for try to get one that is not water cooled ( not sure if it is the name) but it waste alot of water. it runs the water o=ver the coils and freezs it insted of filling up trays.......also your bin is the main thing make sure it is well insulated this will make your ice stay longer.

the easiest way to find a used one is to get an ac guy to find you one. they replace alot of them with new ones. then rebuild them and sell them. this is how i found mine

Another tip we had one down under the camp in the storage room, talk about put off some heat. It was like a sauna in there....

They are not as efficient when placed in a hot room or where there is not enough air exchange.

We tend to keep the door open or a window, it helps. The room is 15x20 and talk about hot you can't stay in there for more than five minutes

That all depends on how old it is, newer ones are more efficient.
Also on where it is located, insulation, how often you open the lid and how much ice you use.

There is no need for an individual to have a 300 or 400 lb. ice machine, unless you are going to use a lot of ice.

I had a 45 lb./day ice maker at my last house and I couldn't tell the difference in the elect. or water bill after I
installed it. But the bigger ones, you will definitely be able to tell. I needed a lot of ice when I fished offshore.
I stored ice from the small 45 lb. ice maker in trash bags, in a big freezer, until it was needed. I didn't want to
buy a big ice machine and only needed a lot of ice a couple times a month.

My current house isn't plumbed up for an ice machine, or I would buy another small one.

My elect. bill went up about $75 and my water bill about $10. At the bulk machine thats 1,120 pounds of ice a month. Not including maint. on the machine I save about $75 dollars a month. For what I use it's much cheaper to unplug the ice machine and buy bulk.
