Default Seafood allergies!

Turns out the wife is allergic to "shell fish". Found this out when she almost died on our trip to Disney World. Got allergy tested this morning and Doc says it was the shrimp that did it. Go figure. I was planning a crabbing trip pretty soon too. Not sure how I could handle not being able to eat my favorite food. Any of you guys have a similar allergy? I know its a shell fish, but I wonder if she could still handle crawfish? She was really only tested for shrimp.

My grandmother and my dad's secretary are both allergic. The cannot eat shrimp, crawfish, or crabs. Every year we do a large boil for family and friends and they look like they want to kill all of us while we are throwing down on crawfish and they are there with their steak! Glad your wife is ok, but that sure does suck living in Louisiana and not being able to enjoy a seafood platter.

How has she lived life this long and never eaten a shrimp or crawfish to know she was allergic?

First time exposure develops antibodies... which in turn produce mild reactions that she may never have attributed to the shellfish (sneeze, runny nose,) which are common when people consume spicy foods... after a prolonged period of exposure it could trigger more severe reactions (true anaphylaxis i.e. wheezing, swelling, itching, etc.) or hypersensitivity. Thats just my theory. there are several explanations on sensitization and exposure.

My neice is allergic to Shellfish. She can eat fish.

My father in law is alleric to soft shell crabs. He can eat all the crab stew or boiled crabs he wants, pick the fat out the busters, eat the eggs everything. But if he eats some shrimp that were fried in the same oil as a soft shell crab better get his epi-pen out. He's going to have a reaction.

She has eaten shrimp, crawfish, crabs, etc. her whole life. This is just a new development. She may have been only slightly allergic before, but now its apparently very bad. On a 1-10 scale it hit a 10 on the list of things she was tested for. The mother-in-law used to have a shellfish allergy as well. I guess hers kinda went away because she sure eats it when we boil.

Fish and shellfish do not have the same protein... the protein in the shellfish is what causes the reaction. They are not in the same family. Typically need to avoid all types (crsutacea and mollusks) just for safe being. Avoid cooking with products that may contain their proteins (crab, shrimp, lobster, oysters, scallops). Its crazy how much shellfish bases are used in cooking.

Radiocontrast and iodine is not related to shellfish allergy. That is a myth. Just an FYI if she ever needs a procedure.

Same thing happened to me. Ate shrimp my whole life and then one day allergic. I even used to catch my own shrimp in Marsh Island. Funny thing is I can eat any other seafood and even something like seafood gumbo as long as I take the shrimp out.

Them seafood allergies are weird... I can't eat crawfish, but can eat shrimp and crabs. BUT once about 5 yrs ago I ate a bunch of them huge praun size shrimp and it messed me up like the crawfish did. That was the only time I ever reacted to shrimp and I have ate them a 100 times since then with no problems.

What I'm saying is, maybe it's not what she's eating, but what's on it.
