Crab Trap Bait Help

I just got 10 crab traps that i put out yesterday and i baited them with cut up drum i caught the day before. Although this worked very well as i caught 50 crabs today what should i use for bait since i wont always have fish to cut up to use for bait? Any recommendations are appreciated!!

Also i was thinkin about putting out some trotlines to catch some catfish to use as bait is this a good idea?

which end of the lake are you running your traps in? I got some traps and was gonna drop them around manchac at the end of the month? Im not sure what to use for bait. I heard pogies were good, any cut bait really

I live on bayou liberty and i have a few in the bayou and a few a little ways out in the lake, they are kinda small right now though. I've heard pogies are good to but i have no idea where to get any from

Pogies and Catfish Heads work good.

One of the guys around here get Catfish heads from a processing plant in La.

Jonathan Allen 05-05-2010 07:28 PM

any ol cut bait will work. call a local bait store. Or if you just wanna hit the supermarket, Turkey necks

When I am crabbing with drop lines........Trout heads are much better than Redfish heads for bait.

I sometimes use chicken leg quarters......get them on sale for $ .38 per pound or less sometimes. Chicken usually catches just as good as Trout heads.

I had a buddy that married into a family that owned crawfish/rice ponds and a seafood wholesale business.

He went to Grand Isle 5-6 years ago and being a city boy wanted to impress the in-laws. He was going to bring some crab traps and catch a mess to boil for his in-laws so he asked his "friends" what to use for bait. We told him the secret bait that they love is bananas. He went to Winn Dixie and bought two boxes/crates of bananas.

He put out 6 traps,a couple with whole bananas, couple with cut bananas, one with banana mash and in the last he put dead fish.

He caught 0,0,0,0,0,6 on his first run. It took him about 3 runs before he called us wanting to fight.

I always use catfish heads or chicken. You should be able to catch all the hardheads you want right now and stick em in the traps.

Fishmaster 05-06-2010 09:56 AM

chicken/turkey necks work really well, also very cheap

Jordan 05-06-2010 11:51 AM

Leave my hardheads alone !

We had that problem before we whould get padlocks and put them on there, if they still want to go threw having to cut it off they can keep it. No one likes a thief.............:shaking: Oh and roofing nails, put them threw the line and it will send a message to who trys pulling them up, but makes it harder for your self also...
