trolling motor crapping out...

My minn kota 5 speed is crapping out! It will skip some speeds and not go to the highest speed. Sometimes by luck I can get it into high speed with just 2 clicks... 5 speed is a pos. I have always had variable in the past and never had this kind of problem. I feel handicapped on the water. Anyone had this problem... is it worth fixing?

I always seem to have some kind of trouble with mine too. Mine runs then randomly shuts off. Move handle back to off and on again and it takes off again???? Weird.

I say you're good as long as its running at all...... :)

Wow! there must be a Minn Kota virus going around. Mine would only run on high. The ribbon connector from the 5 spd switch in the handle to the main module got pinched and several of the connectors were broken. Has anyone ever been successful at splicing them back together?

Mine is doing the exact same thing right now and i cant figure out what is wrong with it. Been thinking about bringing it to the shop but dont have the money right now

First, Open the head, and make sure the 5 spd Mod. is connected with the handle...and all wires are connected...just throwing that out there from past experiences

Mine doesn't have individual wires from the 5 spd to the main block. It has a flat ribbon with 5 small flat conductors inside. The ribbon cable got pinched by the tilt handle and several of the conductors were broken. The connections at the 5 spd switch and at the main block are encased in plastic.

I took the head off of the trolling motor today and found out that the handle was not not connected to the control module so it would only work if i got lucky and caught the head of it just right, 5 minutes later had it back together and working just like new

reckon they could be soldered back together then coated with liquid electrical tape

Worth a try.

Running my minn kota 24V for 11 years now no issues yet.

I currently have a Minn Kota 80# Riptide Pro. On my other boat, I had the 70# Riptide. No issues with either!

He's alive! My Frankenstein Minn Kota that is the product of several previous dead Minn Kota's is back among the living. Shawn and I must think alike, I scraped the plastic off, soldered them little flat conductors back together and coated the whole mess with liquid electrical tape. It ain't purdy but it works. Thanks for the advice.
