Retriver Help

Just wondering if some of yall could help me out? My dog is 7 months now and I'm trying to put him on actual birds. He's currently having trouble picking up the birds by the body, he only wants to pick it up by the neck. He has been forced so if i put it in front of him he will do fine but when its on the ground he's not too sure about it. I've only been working on this for a day but I just wanted some pointers. Any help will be appreciated

ducks? how big is the bird? have you tried sending him only 5 or 10 feet away and does he do the same?

cajunforeman 06-24-2010 10:27 AM

Yes, it was a mallard and he does it anytime the bird is on the ground. Raymond helped me out a lot so I'm going to give his thoughts a try this evening.

If he is picking up a bumper, try duct taping some wings on each side of the bumper to get him used to the feel of it in his mouth.

Mine would drag them by the feet....but with a bumper she'd do fine.

Fixed that by taping wing, just like you said.

Yep. One of my buddies had the same problem last year with a dog about 6-7 months also. Some will just start picking them up, others need a little coaxing by taping the wings. I told him to try this. Works like a charm.

Thanks, I'll try that also

See the Duck......Be the Duck

I am availible most afternoons, don't go to the field until atleast 7 due to the high heat.
Bring that hound over and let's see where he is in the program. Make sure you bring ice
and a couple cold ones for afterwards.

cajunforeman 06-24-2010 11:32 AM

I'll defiantly take care of that. I've been starting around 7 or 7:30 every afternoon that I can. I'm go to try those few things that you told me and then I'll give you a call so we can get together. Thanks again

raymond do you still train in vinton or around lake charles? i NEED to get drake back into training mode so i can get his blinds down good, ever since i moved out of my house i have done ZERO training with him other than just throwing dummies and makin sure he doesnt brake and throwin doubles...all is good there just need to make sure his blinds and hand signals are still where they were during season, on the other hand I believe he is enjoying the break especially since its soo hot.

I have a female from the same litter. She picks up ducks with no prob. Has no trouble when we are alone but anyone or anything else is around and she has a little trouble. I tried to do what i can with her but i dont have enough room being in the city. Kind of hyper for a girl not going to lie.
