Skull Mount

Looking fo a little help from you guys... I have a deer that i killed a few years back that i was planning on doing a skull mount... I dug it out of a barrel in the backyard this evining and the tissue is about 95% removed... I was told to let it soak in water without letting the rack touch the water... After a few weeks take it out and put it in peroxide... Anyone know if this is correct...

Just boil it in your wife's best gumbo pot, that's the best way...

from what i have heard peroxide breaks down the bone and makes it brittle. I had a guy at work do my last skull mount and he boiled the skull without boiling the antlers in a chemical called Salsoda. Not sure if that is the right spelling but I am pretty sure he bought it in a five pound bag of the internet. It removes the tissue and muscle without harming the bone. He said sometimes you have to white wash the skull to make it look really white but he didn't in my case and it turned out nice.

Hubby said take it to your local taxidermist cuz they usually do it for $100-$150, if you don't mind paying that...It ain't worth the headache...:D

put it in an ant pile and come back in a couple of days... all the flesh will be gone...I knew this old man who would take hardhead skulls and paint them(kinda weird i know)but he would just put em in an ant pile for a couple of days and they would be clean with no fish smell even

Have done a few........50+. Remove hide, eyes & as much muscle as possible. Boil for a couple hours (outside!) hit with pressure washer, may have to boil again then hit with Pressure washer again. Be very careful around the nose area, breaks very easily. During boiling I keep checking the nose, when that bone gets loose I pull it off then just super glue it back on after it dries & is finished, fits back perfect. Put in a shallow pan & peroxide, & or clorox just don't get any on the horns. A day in peroxide & or clorox when it dries will be a pretty bone white. Some paint white afterwards, I don't care for that, like the natural bone color better.

You can get the bugs, beetles etc. but if you're only doing one here & there it's not worth it.
