Nice catch. How are them sailcats man? I've never tried them but I know i can catch icechests full everytime i go out of V. Bay if I wanted. Caught probably 15 over 10lbs this past weekend, with plenty of smaller ones.

don't know really. I've heard they're OK. I filleted them & put in separate bags to try.

for real? They don't have a lot of bones? Dude if you wanted you could catch one every cast right at the gulf coming out of southwest pass. Just fish the reef across the channel from caldwell with a popping cork and any plastic tipped with shrimp. And fish where theres about 40ft of water all the way to the reef.

My brother caught a nice size one yesterday between Shark Bayou and Trashpile, we didn't keep it though.

I eat the mess out of sailcats. Their meat is white, just start filleting after their huge bone by the dorsal fin and it provides a bit of meat. Tastes just like catfish. Easy way to get a lot of meat cause they bite about anything. Good for having a fish fry too, easier to catch some days.

Gottogo49 08-09-2010 02:48 PM

Sailcats sure do pull, I'll have to try eating them next time. They are just so slimy.

Ray 08-09-2010 08:12 PM

They leave a buttload of slime on your leader/line.
I will eat them, but I will not clean them.
They are good. I have eaten them before.

Dink 08-09-2010 09:57 PM

im willing to put money on it that i would be able to tell the difference

Ray 08-09-2010 10:02 PM

I can too.
But it is still good eatin..

Ray 08-09-2010 10:04 PM

I like Sheephead too. I never throw them away either.

Asterisk-Rich 08-09-2010 10:05 PM

my dad always told me that catfish and drum and sheephead were all asterisk fish, i guess it just stuck with me

Ray 08-09-2010 10:07 PM

Sheephead is cleaner, more white and better tasting than Redfish. In my opinion.

I have eaten Hardhead and Mullet too, but they ain't too high on my list of
fish to eat. Mullet in Fla. is supposed to be good. That is bull****. Tastes like
they are oily and muddy. Same taste as La. Mullet.
