surf fishing
 

I'm thinking about going friday to the surf around Johnson Bayou area. This is the first time I do this so I was hoping that several of u guys that do this often tell me what to look for. I was wondering what to throw, how far to go down from Holly Beach, and how far do I wade out to the rocks? Do I need a cast net? Any info will be helpful. My boat is in shop and I need to fish!!!!:smokin:

Sometimes the bait and fish are in really close [like 10 feet] to the beach. If you fish where the rock breakers are located it is fairly shallow behind the rocks and deeper between the "breaks". I have caught some Red's right behind the rocks.

If the wind is out of the south......usually the water will be dirty and the trout will be gone. You may catch a Redfish or two.

The first hour or two of daylight.....topwater bite is fairly good. Later....soft plastic or live bait.

I would not advise trying to climb onto the rock breaker. The rock are very very slippery.

I plan on going the following weekend, 8/21. I should be closer to Cameron than Johnson's Bayou. Going to try from the beach first, then walk in a bit.
What's some good live bait? And are dead scrimps any good for the surf?

Can vouch for the slippery rocks but if the fish are not on the inside, rocks are only option. Make sure you bring an old towel and use it to climb the rocks. When wet a towel will let you hop the rocks without slipping, just toss it from rock to rock but be careful. It also helps if you have a net and 30# leader, its a pain but worth it sometimes.
