Surfin' for Specks 8/26/2010

Hit the beach in Johnson Bayou today with Gerald again.
We managed to squeak out 17 Trout and 2 Reds. The winds
were calm out of the NE and 1 to 2 ft. ground swells from
the SE. That made for an interesting day. The winds picked
up around 9 am and started turning out the East. Muddied
up the water and shut down the fish. We caught the same
as yesterday, but the times were a lot longer between
strikes. We climbed up on the rocks and threw soft plastics
on the Gulf side of the rocks. I lost almost a dozen or so
Specks cause I didn't have a net. If you climb on the rocks,
bring a net. There was a couple around 2 lbs. and Gerald's
biggest was 3.5 lbs.
We saw a buttload of guide boats heading West of us. They
must be catching pretty good to the West of Little Fla.
They were constantly passing West bound. Bet the cell phones
were ringing today.

Met a couple of guys from Texas that were fishing in Black Lake. They caught some
nice Reds. They said the water was muddy almost everywhere except where the water
was calm, out of the wind.

I will let Gerald tell you about losing his stringer like I did yesterday.

I will let Gerald tell you about losing his stringer like I did yesterday.

It wasn't my stringer....but the ever valuable dip net. When we hit the beach, heading to the truck to leave.....I reached to pickup my dip net to keep it from getting full of sand. It was not there.

We turned to look back where we had just waded. Ray first spotted my float [hopefully still attached to the net], about half way back to the rocks. A quick wade back and I retrieved the net. The clip I used had come open allowing the rope to come free.

Today the water inside the rocks was ok....but not as good as yesterday. Out by the rocks, the water was fairly dirty......maybe 6" visibility most of the time. Farther out.....it looked browner.

Yesterday there was lots and lots of bait in close to the shore. Today there was very little bait seen all morning.

I see some good reports for today......so we were not in the right spot today. Well......we did keep 19 fish, so it was a faily good day. Most fish caught on Opening Night color soft plastics.

As far as the fire that made it so smoky yesterday.....no smoke today. I looked like the fire had burned it's self out.

Also, I would like the thank the person that posted the picture of the fish cleaning table at the Ellender bridge boat launch couple of days ago. Ray and I did not know there was a place to clean fish there. We used this to clean our fish today and yesterday. This is much better than having to clean fish at home.

FYI......this fish cleaning table is built just like what is at the Calcasieu Point landing......but only one side with 3 sinks.

Note: There are 2 boat launches and the cleaning table is at the second launch a little farther to the east.

Ray 08-26-2010 07:22 PM

There is only 2 sinks, but 3 water hoses and 3 elect. recepticals.
