more fuel problems

boat was running funny for months, ie, it would run fine leaving the dock but if i stopped for a few minutes and tried to get back on plane, it wouldn't get any RPM and would finally bog itself down and die. if i'd sit for ~20 minutes or more, it would crank right up and run like like it was new.

i run through a gamut of tests that my mechanic says to try but no luck. i brought it into the shop and seems that one of my hoses was deteriorated to such a point that it was sending small flakes of hose into the fuel system and fuel pump and clogging it...so new hoses and a cleaning of my fuel pump and fuel system and supposed to all good BUT...

go out today and it was a repeat of everything i went through before...

do i need to do something drastic like drain my fuel?

oh and i've been filling up at a stattion that advertises "no ethanol" in their gas.

any suggestions/recomendations are appreciated,
rambler

what motor do you have? injected or carbed?

Ray 10-10-2010 06:23 PM

Older boats and motors need to change out all the fuel hoses with a hose that has an A-1 rating printed on them.
If you don't, sooner or later they will be eaten up and you will have problems.
It's best you do it now, cause one of these days, everyone will be selling E-10 or higher gas.
The stuff will clean out the gun in the tank and run that into the filters too, so bring extra filters with you.
If you have newer motors, it may not be as bad, but I know that Honda's have had issues with E-10. They lose some HP with ethanol based gas.

carbed

its a carbed motor. the hoses have been changed and the fuel system has been (supposedly) cleaned out.

i'm starting to wonder if its electrical.

sounds like you still have fuel problems. if it were electrical it would run or act up all the time. have you checked the fuel pumps? if its a older motor the ethanol has probably made the diaphragms weak not pumping strong enough to give it fuel. if you changed all your hoses and cleaned your carbs thats the next thing i would do.

also make sure you have a water separator/filter. that helps out a lot. make sure its 10 micron

I have a 05 4 stroke. Yall think I need to change my lines?

Ray 10-12-2010 08:15 PM

See if there is an A-1 stamped on the lines.
Not sure when they started using the new lines.

will do tks

The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) recommends the Type B1 fuel hose for diesel-based applications. The Type A1 hose is the best option for gasoline supply. This hose is less permeable, highly durable, heat resistant and does not collapse under high pressure or vacuum.
A1 rated fuel hoses have a special barrier lining which protects them from modern additives, including ethanol.

I'd change them. I just spent $500 getting mine running again because of the same problem and that was doing the work myself.
