Shoulder Surgery

I was screwing around this summer and fell from about 6 feet (plus my height of 6') onto my right shoulder... have put up with it since but it started hurting more and more so went to get it checked... my doctor took x-rays to rule out bone damage, called it rotator cuff strain or tear. I need my right shoulder for marching festivals as i am the drum major for the next two weeks so they but me in PT to try to loosen it up (which almost hurts more than just letting it be). My therapist has diagnosed it as a glenoid labrum tear which is damage to the cartilage around the end of the shoulder that keeps it in place. Only way to fix it is arthoscopic surgery... Not a definent diagnosis until i get a MRI. If it does turn out that way my duck season is pretty much shot (no pun intended) anyone had this surgery? how much recovery? real painful? and has anyone ever tried to switch shooting arms? My dad is right handed but shoots left handed... don't know how bad its gonna be but pretty sucky outlook right now... I was so looking forward to this season with my new dog too:cry:

its not like switching shooting arms will make your aim any worse than it already is

Call the Lake Charles Gun Club and find someone that is right handed and shoots left. Some good shooters out there that might have tips to switch sides and salvage the season. Might be able to rub it in your older brothers nose in the end.:smokin:

My dad just had a similar or the same surgery...(I'm not a doctor ok!) but expect a little over a month in a arm sling and PT as well for at least six weeks...

i had a complete reconstruction a few years back... at the time the doctors told me it was the most painful surgery know to man (he wasnt lying). they gave me an epidural before the surgery. i had to sleep in a chair for 6 weeks with my arm strapped around my stomach. I WOULD ADVISE AVOIDING SURGERY IF POSSIBLE...my shoulder still hurts to this day and after a good day of duck hunting it is extremely sore

Woodduck Commander 10-25-2010 09:30 PM

that's encouraging

X-rays, MRI's, and PT are stepping stones to satisfy the Insurance Company. The only way for a Doctor to know is to open it up and look. Been there done that. Went in for a small repair and the Doc found out it was massive.

Rotator Cuff is a challenging recovery, but once completed, very much worth it.

You are looking at the short term, worrying about one season of duck hunting out of your entire life time.

Try looking at long term affects of never having it done or putting it off until the it gets much worse and full recovery is NOT possible.

Just sayin'.

Best of Luck!

Mine wasn't a complete reconstruction but they had to do a good bit of work on my rotator cuff, scrape a spur off of my bone and repair a tendon that was almost severed due to the spur. It was VERY painful. I had to do the whole 6 weeks with my arm in a sling then strapped around my stomach thing and that sucks big time. It was worse than when I had to wear a knee imobilizer brace 24/7 for 3 weeks and couldn't bend my leg at all. I still have problems with my shoulder and it's been 9 years since I've had the surgery. The #1 thing to remember is to do what the Dr tells you to do! I tried moving along too quickly when I got to the rehab process so that I could try to at least work out in the off-season for football and I think that's when I actually messed it up again. Take the PT very seriously and don't rush it. Because I tried rushing mine there's alot of things that I should easily be doing that sometimes give me fits.

That's good news bro. I had an MRI this morning and will get the results back on my knee, Friday morning.

I don't think I'm getting out from under the knife, they just want to make sure there aren't any surprises when they get in there.
