Baiting a hole for crappie . . .
 

Tis the season . . .
I have used all kinds of structure - willows, sweet gum, etc. - and all kinds of grains - milo, wheat, etc. to bait a hole, all with about the same results. Is there a "best" combination to attract and hold crappie? I will be redoing some of my holes and want the most bang for my buck. Holes are on T-Bend. Thanks

PVC structures..... Especially if you know a plumber that save any cracked or broken fittings & cut offs for you, weigh it down by filling bottom pipes with quickcrete. Will last a lifetime will hold fish & very seldom get hung in it or lose fish.

x3 PVC wont rot out, sure it may take more upfront cost, but it will last and you wont have to re do your holes every 3 years or so.

Bamboo works great also. I have put some down on wed afternoon and caught friday morning off of the hole. I cut them that morning or the evening before so most of the leaves stay on until i sink. I put about 10 or so in a 5 gallon bucket and fill with concrete. Jigs and hooks normally slide off. Last for 4-5 years and doesnt show up well on depth finders. I normally drop 3-5 buckets in a circle close to the river in a bend. We have been doing this for 10 years or so and usually catch 3-400 a weekend off of 2 or 3 holes. I also have tried everythng and found this works the best. But never have tried pvc.

if you know a plumber and can get scrap PVC ,Make some PVC trees Cement a 5-6 '
piece of 4" pvc pipe into a five gallon bucket and drill holes in it so you can run pieces of 1/2" -3/4" and 1 " pvc thru the main pipe to form a tree.
Before you sink the tree, put a few lbs of cottonseed meal or cakes in the center pipe and cover the top w/ a cap w/ 1/2 " holes drilled in it.
The cottonseed draws the minnows to the tree which then draws the sacalait.
If you cut the rim off the 5 gallon bucket it is allmost impossible to hang up on these trees.
