Trolling motor help

Im new to this forum but a buddy of mine lives on here lol. Anyway i have a great white trolling motor that came on the boat its an older model but has worked faithfully until saturday. Now i have to use the bypass to get it to work the variable speed stopped working. I have looked at all the connections and just dont really know what to try. I hate to buy a new motor and find out later it was a $5 fix. Its a 67lb thrust not sure how old. Thanks for any help

Best thing to do is bring it to your local repair shop. Taking a guess buying parts will cost you more in the long run.

Never heard of a "bypass" on a Trolling motor.......please explain.

When you get it to work.......does it just run at one speed?

Montauk17 05-17-2011 10:56 PM

High bypass is high speed only

Trahan 05-17-2011 10:56 PM

yeah under the twist handle with 1-10 for speed it has a toggle switch that says variable speed or bypass if i switch to bypass it works but its only at full speed that way.

just went trough the same thing with the same style trolling mtr...you can still get the potentiaometer, which is the reastat for the speed control, but 90% its gonna be the board thats right under the cap...bad news is motorguide discontinued that style. They are making an upgrade for it for about 350$, comes with the new style speed selector and new brush assly. for the motor..The best thing is to just put in high bypass and just bump your bigfoot as you need if you have one..

Ohh yea, I did change out my throttle control and it did not work mine just turns at the slowest it will run in variable mode..Ive just been controling mine with the bigfoot because the trolling mtr shop said it shouldnt hurt it..hope this helps.

Trahan 05-18-2011 06:50 AM

Yeah that helps alot now It gives me some options I appreciate it

jldsc 05-18-2011 08:32 PM

I would find out what control board your Trolling motor has and then look on Ebay to see if you can find it. I would think you have a good chance of finding the board you need.

If you can not find the part listed..... try sent message to some of the suppliers and ask if they have this control board.

jldsc 05-19-2011 02:50 AM

The guy at superior trollin mtrs in laf. told me they where discontinued..I may look for one there, all the 67, 72, & 82 lb/thrust are supposed to be the same in 24v..never thought of ebay??

jldsc 05-19-2011 03:08 AM

Just found this, Broadwaytackle.com..there showing that they have some left over stock but everywhere else is showing discontinued????

Trahan 05-19-2011 10:43 AM

Yeah that sounds like a plan Im going to order one today.

Trahan 05-19-2011 10:44 AM

Inch I put the Bigfoot ped on so I'm ready to go Saturday my sunburn should be manageable by then lol

evidrine 05-19-2011 11:01 AM

It could be as simple as a broken or corroded connection. Just check it out when you take it down before you order anything.

Trahan 05-19-2011 05:04 PM

Will do that would be nice

Tex Dawg 05-21-2011 01:02 AM

One of the large black ground wires on the corner front of the board is the main one that gets corroded & comes off. Mine did that about 4 times, resoldered unit I burnt the board, then upgraded to digital.
