Replica Vs. Fish mount

Hey guys,
I am relatively new to the forum. Much more informative than any others I have been to. I have fished Big Lake for 15 years with friends and in my duck boat, but finally bought my first bay boat in February. I am really trying to get serious about learning this fishery and I learn more and more everytime I go. Read Trout Masters cover to cover. I have become addicted to catching big trout on top. I have good trips then the lake humbles me the next time out. I have caught about 10 6lbders and 1 7lber. Question- If I do catch a 8lb plus trout I would certainly like to mount it. How do the mounts compare? I assume for a replica you measure length, weight, and girth. Anything else needed? I would sure like to release the big girl, but just wanted get some opinions on the topic before I catch her.

Get the Skin mount 100%.....If you catch a trout or bass that is worth putting on the wall....keep the fish....

Pic are not great...took in my garage..

I was wondering the same thing. I have caught several 7+ trout one 9.5. But I was really thinkin bout gettin a replica for the memory of the trout that won me the money. It wasn't the biggest I've caught but certainly the most memorable. I have the length measurement but I didn't get the girth. Was a pretty skinny fish though. Long and slim.

Nice mount! Who did that? German? When doing a skin mount do you just wrap it in a garbage bag and stick in the freezer or is there a better way of preserving it?

Skin mount fo sho.... Can get pricey but worth the $ IMO . Only replica I'd get would be a big blue water fish that would be a ton of $ for skin mount

As soon a u catch fish wrap it in yer shirt b4 throwin it in the ice chest to protect it from scratching ect... Once I get home wash it with cold water all over even inside the mouth , my guy says to then make sure all fins r flat n not bent and wrap it in a wet beach towel then wrap it in visceen n tape put into a deep freeze if not mounting right away

I bought mine to German still in the live well....lol

replica's look better and hold up better over time IMHO. Lots of pics help. A good taxidermist can look at the pics and get really close if you have just weight and length.

Unfortunately I don't have any pics at all. It went straight to the livewell to the weigh in. Never got a pic

Ill Have to disagree on that......He is a few Picks of a Replica...I have seen two up close and to me it looks too fake..Like a kids toy....
These two were placed in the top 3 in a taxidermy replica contest....In my eyes still looks too fake

Super Spook 06-06-2011 01:38 PM

Those look bad, especially the top one!!!! No yellow around the mouth. Your skin mount blow those away.

RatherBFishin 06-06-2011 02:00 PM

Replicas are too perfect. The imperfections in a skin mount are what give a fish character. You can buy replicas online all day long. You will never catch that trophy fish again. Skin mount all the way! No matter what kind of fish.

Get a skin mount looks way better....if u want a fake fish go to toys-r-us

Its just a photoshop Pic...but you get the idea....trout coming out of the water hitting a topwater... He will have to cut the fish in half...
