Mercury Optimax Pro XS

Anyone running one of these motors...what is the reputation? Any major issues to know about?

Thanks,

Dan

Got the 250 pro Xs with no issues thus far.

PRO XS is built by Merc Raceing department, so that means a its a hopped up Optimax. I read that the 250 PRO XS dyno's around 290hp

Sounds like u thinking Haynie ?

Big Ridge 06-09-2011 02:52 PM

I bought a Pro XS 225, for my new boat will pick it up around June 30th. It will be hanging on the back of a Haynie. Heard a lot of good things about the motor from the guys running them.

cmdrost 06-09-2011 02:56 PM

from what i've heard, you can run the 225 all day long. Its the 250's they've had a few problems with.

Don't tell me that Drost

cmdrost 06-09-2011 03:13 PM

all hearsay bro.... I wouldn't let it bother you. I haven't heard any first hand encounters from 250 owners. But I do think this is the reason all the guides at HR&G run the 225 on their boats.

whitemike985 06-09-2011 03:47 PM

Don't have a big boy 225 or 250. I got a 115 pro xs. Live it so far. Still breaking it in. Great power and reall good fuel economy. I have about 2 1/2 hours of break in run time on it so far. Still haven't burned half a tank of gas so far(have a 26 gal. tank)

I'm on my second 225 Pro XS. Love it!!! Quiet for a 2 stroke. Doesn't burn any oil. Getting around 4.4 miles per gallon on a 24 Haynie. It'll run if you need it to. Very good motor. I think it's actually putting out around 245 horses. They are a reliable motor, knock on wood. 250's seemed to be wound up too tight. Oh, and they come with a 3 year warranty with the option of a 2 year upgrade.

BayBolt23 06-09-2011 06:47 PM

Hey Boatdriver what kind of RPMs u running to get 4.4 miles per gallon?

does it feel like 245 or have you put it on a dyno?

boatdriver 06-09-2011 08:20 PM

I was told it was more like 242. Yes, my boat goes 62! I can't justify spending $1800 more for a 250 ProXS for 3-4 mph. And, not to mention that Chris said there were some problems with the 250s.

BOLT I cruise at 3800 rpms all day long. With or without customers. I only open it up when needed to. Usually 38-39 mph. Plenty for me.

Why rated it as a 225 hp if it puts out 242 hp?
Same with the 250 hp...

All engines make more hp without a lower unit. When they test them at the factory it is done on a bench test with no lower unit. You loose up to 20% of the crank shaft hp once you install the lower unit. Same thing with vehicles....with no transmission and rear end you have a significant amount of more hp.

Are you asking about the 225 Sport XS or 225 Pro XS? Regardless, I haven't heard of any particular problems on either line that haven't been issues on other Mercs. The only issues that have been problems lately have been bad coils (which Merc has gotten figured out), and the dreaded 100hr #6 cylinder pop. Personally I like the Sport XS due to it being produced by Merc's race shop (better QC) and the option of gearcase styles/ratios. Both are good motors, just depends on what you're looking for. The Pro XS will have a longer warranty, but the Sport XS will run like a spotted dog!

I hate to say it,but mercury's new updated coils have failed already. When I worked at a mercury warranty center we changed out quite a few new coils. That is what you get when they are made in mexico....

flounder_smacker 06-10-2011 10:51 AM

I would like to see a reg opti against a pro and sport of the same hp sticker on same boat with exact same setup. See if the extra dough is really worth it
