New boating law in Louisiana

The boating legislation said U.S. Coast Guard-certified motor vessel captains could be exempt from required state boating safety classes.
Present law says people born after Jan. 1, 1984, can operate a boat powered by a motor in excess of 10 horsepower only if they have successfully completed boating safety classes approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.

Evidence of that instruction has to be in a person’s possession when he or she operates a boat.

At one point if I remember correctly it was 1989 then they changed it... The class is really simple and can be done online.

That law went into effect a while ago. I took mine at the Lake Charles boat club. They dont charge you but they ask that you donate $5 for pizza.

Just found this on the WLF website.....

Boating Education Online
If a classroom course is not a convenient option, a student may take the state approved online boating course provided by Boat-Ed.com. This course is not administered by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, but it is approved by the state to satisfy boating education requirements. There is a fee for the online course charged by Boat-Ed. Upon successful completion the student is provided a temporary certificate from the website. The student is issued a state boating education card approximately 3-4 weeks later. For more information visit Boat-Ed’s website at www.boat-ed.com (clicking on this link will take you to an external website) or call 1-800-830-2268.
