Lab a good blood dog?

Thinking about getting a lab to trail deer with. Are labs a good breed to train to do this?

specktator 06-24-2011 05:44 PM

Mine has found 4-5 deer with no training.

FinFeatherFur may be a good lead for you on this issue. I think he does a lot with trailing dogs and I'm sure he'd know where to turn for things as such.

Think about this. Labs are used in Law Enforcement as drug dogs and search and rescue. The reason they are using Labs is because of their nose. Labs are being used more and more for blood trailing. If interested I have a litter of lab pups comeing up. I will say their background has no blood trailing in it but they are have a solid back ground in hunting. I would get a Lab for blood trailing if I was going to get into it.

if you are loosing deer a dog might not be your answer. may need to work on your shooting.:D

I knew that was coming.....some just don't bleed much. Shot a 8 point last year that did not bleed a drop of blood. Had 8 of us searching the woods and we finally found him after 3 hours.

flounder_smacker 06-25-2011 07:17 AM

yeah man sometimes they are hard to find. i hunt the marsh and sometimes they will dig underneath a pile of grass and die and you cant find them even if you walk over them. a guy we hunt with has a blackmouth and does a awesome job. another member has a female lab that was trained to retrieve but we have been teaching her to track. she found 2 last year just takes her a lil while.
